Save children's backs - reduce school bag wgt (Carmel Convent School Chandigarh)
Petitioning: reduce the school bag weights to the permissible levels
Petitioner: Concerned parent started on October 30, 2017
The rising back problems in children due to over weight school bags are a growing health problem. Despite norms being laid down, schools are not reducing the weight of school bags.
There are scientific studies showing heavy school bags leading to damage to spine in children
The central Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 — better known as Right to Education (RTE) Act — clearly states that a schoolbag should not weigh more than 10% of a student's body weight. Moreover, it directs schools to provide cupboards and lockers to students to keep their books in school.
Despite all these directives, the weight of school bags is still increasing leading to frequent back pain and spine problems.
