Please Withdraw the Suspension Order

"Five teachers of a government-aided school in Dum Dum have been suspended in connection with the drowning of a Class VI student in a pond in Hingalganj, North 24-Parganas.

Rajarshi Das and four other students of Dum Dum Kishore Bharati High School had gone to Hingalganj with five teachers on October 7 to shoot a short film based on Tagore's Chhuti.

Rajarshi Das, the only child of Mrityunjoy Das and Soma Das, drowned while he and the other children were bathing in a pond in the house of one of the teachers. The child could not swim.

Souvik Ghosh, a member of the school's managing committee, said the institution was not involved in the shoot. "Only the five teachers and the five students knew about the project," he said.


Rajarshi's father, however, said his son and the four other students were chosen from a group of 15.

Ghosh claimed the parents who had sent their children to Hingalganj did not check with headmaster Nityaranjan Bagchi whether the school was aware of the shoot. Repeated calls to Bagchi's cellphone went unanswered.

"Although the school was in the dark about the project... we found them guilty of dereliction of duty and therefore suspended them. The state secondary education board has been alerted," said Ghosh.

Sources said the suspension following an informal order from the board.

Mrityunjoy alleged that the teachers were not around when the children were bathing in the pond. "The five kids were in the company of the wife of the teacher in whose house they had gone," he said.

The father had lodged a complaint with Hingalganj police station on October 8. The next day the teachers surrendered in the Basirhat court and were granted bail."

The total incident was an accident. Teachers were not directly involved in this. As e are the ex-students of Dumdum Kishore Bharati High School, we know how careful they are about the students. Although they went to shoot the short film. But it was an accident. We beg you to withdraw this suspension order if possible.
