Save the Westen Ghats - Get the UNESCO Heritage tag..!

UNESCO has offered to accord the 'world heritage tag' to 36 sites in the Western Ghats spread across Maharastra, Karnataka, Kerala & Tamil Nadu.

10 sites out of the proposed 36 are in the state of Karnataka. The Government of Karnataka is opposing the UNESCO tag being offered, where as all other states have agreed to accept the heritage tag.

WHY KARNATAKA IS SAYING NO TO THE UNESCO TAG..?

The western ghats in Karnataka are rich in mineral resources. The ministers know that the World Heritage tag would simply make things difficult for them to loot the mineral rich forests of Western Ghats.
The Government is highly influenced by the thriving mining lobby in the state. Many of the people's representatives (MPs & MLAs) are involved in the lucrative mining business.
The Government hence is now raising the 'people' & 'development' card to avoid the UNESCO heritage tag.

THE 10 SITES SELECTED BY UNESCO. All rich in wildlife and forests...
4 wildlife sanctuaries: Pushpagiri, Brahmagiri, Talacauvery and Someshwara.
5 reserve forests: Padinalknad, Someshwara, Agumbe, Kerti and Balahalli.
1 national park: Kudremukh.

Its our responsibilty to raise our voice and request the Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa & Minister of Forests CH Vijayashankar to accept the UNESCO heritage tag.

Kindly sign this petition to save our forest resources.
