Young BJP leader Varun Gandhi invoked religion during electioneering in Pilibhit. Asking for votes based on one's religion is undemocratic.

Cases under various IPC sections and the Representation of the People Act have been registered against him for allegedly trying to fan communal passions, but the investigating agencies forgot to add the IPC provision for indecency, a term mostly used in the context of sex alone.

The dictionary meaning of decency is, an action conforming to current standards of behaviour or propriety, etc.
In a secular polity, however, correct behaviour or propriety requires that an appeal for votes should not be made on the ground of religion, which, by itself, is no index of the suitability of a candidate.

We urge that a case of indecency must also registered against him. This will prevent the leaders from making despicable statements and will act as a deterrent to their behaviour of defying the secular character of the state. Misuse of the expression of Hinduism to promote communalism cannot alter its true meaning. Such misuse is not permissible in law.
