Appeal for Medical Support for Social Activist Trepan Singh Chauhan

Dear Friends,

With deep felt regrets, we are writing this appeal in order to inform you that, our fellow activist, friend and novelist, Trepan Singh Chauhan, from Uttarakhand, has been diagnosed to have an extremely dangerous, malignant form of cancer called pancreatic carcinoma. He is admitted at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi. According to the doctors, the situation entails a high risk operative measure.

The surgery to the above is scheduled by the doctors on 15th of July, 10. The date of surgery could be preponed further given the condition of Trepanji.

Since a huge expenditure (Rs 4 - 5 lakhs) will be incurred in the operation and post rehabilitative efforts, we would like to make an appeal to all those who can support us in this endeavor. As we all know, being diagnosed with cancer is a physically and emotionally trying experience not only for the patient but also the family. We hope that you shall be able to extend yourself in supporting Trepan and his family through these trying times by donating whatever amount you think you can help us with. Also looking to his unstable condition, doctors have asked for blood donors for Trepanji before and after surgery.

Let us all wish for a safe return of Trepan to his activism soon in good health and for his family - his wife and his children – a son (aged around 4 years) and a daughter (of around 2 years). Please find below a note on Trepan Singh Chauhan.

How to donate: You can send the cheques to SRUTI or deposit the cheque or cash at S. B. account number 0346101027304, Canara Bank, S. D. Area, New Delhi, 16.

A note on Trepan Singh Chauhan:

As many of you would be aware about Trepan's activism and literary accomplishments, it would suffice to add a few lines regarding them. Trepan Singh Chauhan, aged 40, hails from the Bhilangana block of Tehri Garhwal (Uttarakhand). His activism developed through the major movements in Uttarakhand – Chipko, Anti-Tehri Dam and the Statehood movements. He is particularly known for organizing the peasantry (especially women) in his area on the issues of forest rights, right to information, van panchayat, popular self-determination and corruption. Recently, he has been involved in the campaign on the right to education. From 2008 onwards, he has been trying to link up the rural and urban struggles of the oppressed and exploited in Uttarakhand – he has been involved in organizing labourers in Dehradun, the capital city of Uttarakhand.

His novel in Hindi, Yamuna (published in 2007), narrating the experience of the Uttarakhand Statehood movement, is critically acclaimed in the literary circle. In 2009, a collection of Trepan's short stories, Darvaze ke piichhe, was published.
