SAY NO TO ALCOHOL
We The Art of Living-Kerala submit this memorandum as the part of
“Alcohol Free Kerala Project†to Sri. Oommen Chandy the Hon: Chief
Minister of Kerala for kind consideration and favorable implementation.
Sir,
Our beloved State, Kerala, the God’s own country, culturally and
educationally elevated State, is now facing the social threat of alcoholic
addiction. This disease is spreading irrespective of gender, social status
and literacy among the people of Kerala. And they suffer from physical and
psychological problems. Even though a good amount of our revenue which
could have been used for the development of the State, is being diverted for
the treatment and rehabilitation of addicted patients but there is no visible
results. The increasing cases of violence, robbery and sexual harassments by
addicted youths are to be seen seriously.
The more affected people are the home makers, as they are not able to meet
the daily expenses, even though their husbands are getting handful wages,
which is being utilized for alcohol due to addiction. Over and above, they
are also facing the torture from the drunkard husbands and they become the
victims of psychological disorder. The new generation is also moving towards
this trend, which is dangerous to the nation as a whole. Alcohol is the culprit
behind most of the criminal activities happening in our State. Around 40
lakhs out of 338 lakhs of people in Kerala are addicted to alcohol. An average
of 4000 people is using alcohol in every Panchayath of Kerala. It is surprising
to note that a Malayalee starts drinking at the tender age of 11. The death
on the road by drunken driving is around 4000 every year.
Annually, the State is spending Rs.3000 Crores for the purchase of rice,
whereas, Rs.8818 crores was spent for alcohol in the year 2012-13 according
to the Bevarages Corporation data. Alcohol is going to create a disaster to
Kerala by disturbing the integrity, by deteriorating the economy and by
increase of social issues & criminal offences.
Under this circumstances, as a responsible citizen of this land, I humbly
request the Government of Kerala to bring a total ban on alcohol
immediately.
