Dear Prime Minister,

I am an Indian citizen who lives and works in the US. Yesterday we learnt here about yet another brutal gun violence in a college campus in Oregon. Ten lives were lost, and countless others will continue to bear the pain of this mindlessness for several years. The point is, that instead of sitting still, the US President, and your great friend Barack Obama immediately stepped up to the podium and made an impassioned appeal to legislators across party lines to take the essential steps to stop this ongoing rampage and carnage.

On the other hand, I woke up a couple of days ago to the news that one Mohammad Akhlaq has been brutally murdered by a lynch mob over allegations that he and his family had consumed beef. Not only have you not responded to a matter as grave as this where a sustained and systematic attack has been launched on a fellow citizen but the leaders of your political organization has chosen to vilify the victim and his supposed crime.

The concerned "crime" by the way is not a crime at all. A free citizen in a free country should have the right to choose what he or she eats. No government should have the authority to either sanction or ban foods based on anyone's interest (unless we are talking about GMO food, which by the way your govt. keeps turning a blind eye to). Mr. Akhlaq's murderers are criminals and they need to be punished in the severest of terms.

And you sir, as the elected head of the largest democracy in the world need to address the situation. You need to assure us, the concerned citizens that you will take all possible steps to ensure that such an unfortunate incident is not repeated in any corner of the country. Please remember that you are the Prime Minister of India first.

The concerned citizens of India need their elected PM to speak up and take charge.

Thanks,

Concerned Citizens
