Logo for Legal Fishing in India
Petitioning: In order to combat illegal fishing which heavily contributes to over fishing
Petitioner: Abigale D'Souza started on April 24, 2017
Overfishing poses a worldwide threat to fish stocks. 90% of India's fish resources have been estimated at or above maximum sustainable levels of exploitation. The present fishing techniques also alter habitats by destroying and disturbing bottom topography and associated habitats (eg. seagrass and algal beds, coral reefs) and benthic communities. Illegal fishing in done without government permission and does not follow the guidelines and rules imposed by the authorities thereby committing crimes that not only go against the law but also nature. Illegal fishing is a billion dollar industry, and we all cater to them as we have no idea where fish produce is obtained So, in an effort to combat and reduce this practice, I'd like to propose that the government start assigning logos to fleets that have been legally granted permission to fish. The usage and promotion of this logo will make more people aware of overfishing and the harm it causes to marine ecology. It would be great to get as many signatures possible.
