We plan to submit a Kilometre long petition to the Hon'ble President of India requesting her to take appropriate action so that the atrocities of August-September 2008 in Kandhamal are not repeated. We are collecting signature on the hard copy and a parallel move to collect online signature is also on. The State Government of Orissa has failed to carry out the primary responsibilities of a state to protect its citizens from the atrocities committed by a group since August 2008 in Kandhamal. In the process the state has failed to enforce the rule of law and violated the fundamental rights of the Christian community of Kandhamal. We don’t see this only as a minority’s rights violation but Human Rights Violation of a group of Citizens of India.

The present situation in Kandhamal is far from normal. About 50% of the 50,000 displaced have not been able to return. Many of those returned are denied access to water, firewood, and even shopping for daily necessaries.

We from the civil society fear a repeat of the August 2008 atrocities committed on the Christian population. Earlier too, the attacks on the Christian community had been totally unprovoked and we fear that the State Government will be found wanting once again, if its past track record is any indication of its future behavior
