HRD recently cut down the fundings of IITs by a huge percentage, by citing lack of funds and wrong utilization as the reasons. It is a well known fact that institutes as big (not just in terms of size but also of scale) cannot function smoothly and to theie full functional capacity, unless sufficient funds are allocated for departments, lab, hostels and recreational facilities. Such huge campuses supporting close to 10,000 residents each is bound to have economic demands, not all of which can be met by sponsored project, alumni donations and student fees. Lack of funds is going to hinder not just the expansion of current facilities by even sustenance of current activities. And it is beyond doubt that standards of excellence cannot be maintained without accomodating all facilities and activities in any given system. HRD ministry is hence requested to not curtail flow of funds to the IITs for the wrong reasons.
