Pune city has recently seen the making of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act. However, the law contains provision for criminal charges against children for neglect of parental care in later's old age. By making its provisions criminal in nature, the law will alienate children from their parents. It will criminalise the relationship between parents and their children. One can not expect love for foster by binding it with law. Legal protocols can not and should not replace personal ethics. There are other 'civilian' methods of dealing with neglect of parental care. We hope that common sense will prevail over the government that it cannot force children to love their parents by making laws against them. Here's requesting the government to reconsider the law and amend it at the earliest. Also the whole machinary must be made less bureaucratic for elderly people to fell free to approach it, without getting deterred.
