Congenital Birth Defect

Congenital birth defect is a major concern which is quite rare to see out of 100 children 2 children get this kind of defect which is present since birth. However, these days I have seen lots of cases where children get bluish as they suffer from congenital heart birth defect wherein there is a hole in the heart along with valve blocked. Its a shame to our democratic country that these kind of treatments are not covered in any of the medical insurance policies and stands as a major exclusion in their exclusion list.
Now, some NGO's like Being Human supports people who are BPL which is an awesome initiative as in rural areas this disease is seen in a different way pertaining to several ghosts myths which is because of lack in education and awareness in people. So some NGO's visit rural areas and find these kind of kids and help them by getting them operated which is a fix for these kind of defects. The cost in a normal hospital varies from 3 to 6 lacs in case of fixing these defects however if BT Shunt is required in case of infants who can't go for the fix because of their age then it raises to plus 2 to 3 lacs.
These kind of diseases are covered in US and European countries however, India is way back in health sector. Not sure why the basic things like health which is the most important thing cannot be improved and medical insurances are earning like anything however, when it comes to processing claims then they come up with these exclusions and if they know about these diseases they will not cover your child in the insurance at all. So where should a middle class parent go. If a medical bill of 6 to 8 lacs comes to him suddenly whom should he approach. Insurance companies will pose a clear no to the child. NGO will tell you that you should be BPL or not earning at all. Isn't it the right of a new born baby to live and be covered like us normal individuals without being his/her fault.

We should have improvised medical insurance policies which should benefit people not the insurance companies. Government should work to improvise and facilitate the health insurances and instruct the companies to adhere by the government rules. If a country is not able to provide to provide basic health commodities to its citizens then which direction are we heading to?
